Counseling beyond Mere Monotheism

Trinitarian theology carries with it inherent tensions. Placing undue emphasis upon the unity of God reduces Him to a nebulous concept devoid of the unique ministries of the Father, Son, and Spirit. Focusing on the plurality of God likewise is fraught with error as the unity of God’s will and acts are obscured by the unique role of each member. As biblical counselors, we see God’s work in our counselees’ lives as foundational to successful counseling. Biblical counseling works because God is real. I wonder, however, how often our counsel reflects the robust doctrine of God as seen in the theological richness of the Trinity’s three-in-oneness.
