Mike, a beloved African-American member of our church, values the biblical counsel that our church provides for his life and marriage. However, he periodically struggles to receive the soul-care I provide because of what my whiteness represents to many black image-bearers here in the south. The honest tension that Mike and I periodically experience in our walk together creates a unique challenge that an increasing number of white biblical counselors are going to face as the Southern Baptist Convention progressively removes the stain of racism from the fabric of our most influential churches and institutions.
