The Pastor and Counseling
January 7-8, 2016
Counseling is one of the harder things pastors have to do, especially when knowing how to help is unclear. Understanding someone’s struggle is often far less straightforward than understanding what Scripture says on a particular topic. In this forthcoming Alumni Academy, Dr. Jeremy Pierre and Dr. Deepak Reju will offer theological and practical guidance for pastors and lay leaders who do the hard work caring for sheep in the trenches.
Based on their recent book The Pastor and Counseling: The Basics of Shepherding Members in Need, Pierre and Reju will help our alumni by outlining a biblical approach to listening, considering, and speaking into the lives of their people, from the first counseling session to the last. Their approach to the counseling process is realistic about the larger demands of pastoral ministry, and so attempts to give helpful answers to questions such as how counseling should start, what types of questions should guide the process, when counseling should transition to something else, how to refer to outside resources responsibly, and how the pastor can keep himself from being overwhelmed by it all.
