Ministry Interview Series--Healing Hearts Ministries International

BCC Staff: As part of our BCC vision, we want to point you to the best of the best in robust, relational, biblical counseling. Periodically we’re posting (and then making available as an ongoing resource) interviews with churches, para-church groups, educational institutions, and individuals committed to biblical counseling. You can find links to all of our interviews here.

Healing Hearts Ministries International

Today we’re pleased to introduce you to the ministry of Healing Hearts Ministries International.

BCC: “Please tell our readers about the mission and vision of Healing Hearts.”

HH: “Our  vision is to equip lay leaders in every church using the Gospel of Jesus Christ to bring hope and healing to those who are hurting by walking them through God’s Word. Through our Healing Hearts mission we are committed to:

  • Upholding the sufficiency of Scripture: No other source of knowledge thoroughly equips us to counsel in ways that transform the human heart (Psalm 19:7-14; 2 Timothy 3:16-17; 2 Peter 1:3).
  • Coming alongside the local church: Training those who have received healing through our Bible Studies so they can minister to those who are broken and hurting in their home churches. We also offer lay leaders ongoing training, resources and support (2 Corinthians 1:3-4; 4:2).
  • Offering biblical discipleship/counseling materials: Healing Hearts resources bring aid to the Body of Christ by providing a platform of discipleship/biblical counseling in which lay leaders in the local church can minister to individuals who have been broken by sin (Ephesians 4:12).
  • Confronting the hard issues: All Healing Hearts materials are designed to minister to, disciple and equip the body of Christ and are effective to counsel the more stigmatizing issues such as abortion, sexual sin, sexual abuse, divorce and catastrophic loss (Hebrews 4:12).”

BCC: “What are the primary services/ministries that you offer? Who is your primary audience?”

HH: “Primarily, we offer biblical counseling or intensive discipleship with a Healing Hearts trained lay-leader, through 1 of our 3 Bible studies for adults:

  • Binding up the Brokenhearted (for women who are post-abortive)
  • Wounded Warrior (for men who are post-abortive)
  • The Hem of His Garment (for women who have other hurts in their past)
  • Secondarily, we offer a Bible study called First Love: Embracing a Love that Lasts for parents/mentors to use with young women ages 13 thru college.”

BCC: “What is the history of your ministry? Tell us your story.”

HH: “Our ministry was started by Sue Liljenberg who had an abortion in 1972 at the age of 18 and suffered for 10 years because of self-destructive sin until she came to know Jesus as her Lord and Savior.  From the time of Sue’s conversion she was taught that the Word of God was sufficient for all things. She was discipled and ministered to by God’s Word where she found hope and healing from her past sins and afflictions. With a deep desire to be used by God, Sue started reaching out to women in her church and community. Healing Hearts has since grown from a table-top kitchen ministry to an international organization that has ministered to and trained women who now counsel other women in their churches and communities using Healing Hearts materials.”

BCC: “What is your succinct definition of biblical counseling?”

HH: “Biblical counseling is coming alongside a person to see God’s desire of biblical change to Christ-likeness realized in their life either through evangelism or discipleship. We believe women should counsel women and men should counsel men. The goal is not behavior modification, but rather to see a person grow and change to be more like Christ as they learn from God’s Word and apply it to their lives by His grace. It ascribes to Colossians 1:28.”

BCC: “Share a little bit about your staff—who works with you and in what roles?”

HH: “All Healing Hearts counselors have been through one of the Healing Hearts Bible studies first as a client and then further trained to facilitate those studies in their churches under the authority of their pastor/church leadership. Healing Hearts requires 6-9 months of biblical discipleship prior to training and requires that the potential leader’s church sign an affiliation agreement to approve their leadership prior to applying for training.

We have Regional Directors who oversee 8 regions within the US. These directors were once clients who were discipled to be leaders and then because of years of experience counseling, they now mentor and train new leaders within the ministry. Two of our Regional Directors have been with the ministry over 20 years. They exist to serve the Healing Hearts leaders under them as they serve in their churches. We have three directors that oversee other areas of our ministry: our International Director, our Youth Division Director and our E-Ministry Director. All of these directors are volunteers with the exception of the International Director and the Youth Division Director.

Currently, we have four administrative staff persons who work in our headquarters in our Washington State office to support the directors who volunteer their time in our ministry.”

BCC: “What are the types of resources that people can find at your site/through your ministry?”

HH: “Three adult Bible studies attended in either small group format or through our online counseling interface:

  • Binding up the Brokenhearted (for women who are post-abortive) and Wounded Warrior (for men who are post-abortive)
  • The Hem of His Garment (for women who have other hurts in their past)
  • First Love: Embracing a Love that Lasts Bible study and its Leader’s Guide for parents/mentors to use with young women ages 13 thru college is sold for distribution to anyone through our online store.

  • Spiritual Discipleship by Oswald Sanders
  • Instruments in the Hands of the Redeemer by Paul Tripp

BCC: “What upcoming conferences, seminars, classes, and other training opportunities do you have in the next year?”

HH: “Our annual conference & leadership training is held every year the third week in October.

For 2014-2015, in various regions of the U.S., we are offering mother and teen daughter conferences called “Walking Together” on how to overcome fear, anger and perfection biblically in their relationships. For more info, go here.”

BCC: “How can people be praying for you and your ministry?”

HH: “Post-abortive men and women still feel largely stigmatized in the church. We would covet prayers for men and women who have had an abortion to seek the Lord for healing, or if they have already experienced healing to give testimony to what God’s Word can do in regard to their past. Our Youth Division is trying to develop curriculum for young men similar to the one we offer young women. We appreciate prayers for this effort.”

BCC: “How can people contact you?”

HH: “People can connect with us through:

Healing Hearts Ministries International
P. O. Box 7890
Bonney Lake, WA  98391
(253) 268-0348
Inquires can be made through our web site.”

  1. Thank you, BCC, for interviewing this amazing ministry!! I found this ministry on the internet, oh probably, 15(+) years ago when I needed healing from the regrets I still carried at that time over my choice to abort. This ministry never let me go once I contacted them . . which no other post-abortive did at that time. Healing Hearts is the ministry that not only healed my broken heart but also lead me to my passion of seeing lives restored and healed based on the Word of God ALONE . . . nothing else is needed ~ truth does set you free! I’ve had the honor & privilege of being a leader in this ministry for 10+ years now.
His Word sufficiently heals all wounds and hurts . . whether we choose them ourselves by choices we make or we didn’t choose them because they were sins committed against us. Biblical Counselors out there ~ use this ministry as a tool in your counseling . . . especially with women who’ve aborted. If you want to know more about how you can use it as another ‘tool’ in your toolbox . . please contact us!
Thank you again, BCC, for putting the word out there on this ministry!
Blessings, Lesley (MA in BC, ACBC certified)
